What the symptoms usually mean
Heating but no hot water, or hot water but no heating, points at the diverter valve, which is the component that decides where the heat goes. Firing then cutting out within a minute or two is short cycling, normally from poor circulation, a blocked filter or a pump problem rather than from the burner. Ignition lockout, where it tries three times and gives up, is typically the electrode, the gas valve or the flue. Pressure that climbs when the heating runs and will not come down is usually a failed expansion vessel or a passing filling loop. And banging on ignition is often a partially blocked burner.
